The Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA) is proud to be actively participating in the 48th Task Force of Senior Officials Meeting hosted by the Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group (ESAAMLG) in Diani, Kenya. This gathering, including the 7th Sub-Saharan Africa Anti-Money Laundering/Counter Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Public/Private Sector Dialogue (PPSD), brings together key stakeholders committed to combating money laundering and associated financial crimes.

Present at this crucial forum is the FIA Executive Director, Mr. Samuel Wandera, alongside his team comprised of the Deputy Executive Director, Director of ICT Systems & Security, Manager of International Relations and others. During the meeting, Mr. Bright Besigye, FIA's Manager of International Relations, delivered a significant presentation on Uganda’s progress in implementing the recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) regarding Money Laundering (ML) and Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT) Typologies.

Uganda's Experience and Progress

Mr. Besigye’s presentation highlighted Uganda’s ongoing efforts to address the challenges posed by illegal wildlife trade and related financial crimes. The focus was on implementing the FATF's 2016 Money Laundering and Illegal Wildlife Trade Typology Report and the ESAAMLG study on poaching. Uganda’s progress in these areas underscores the nation’s commitment to international AML/CFT standards and to addressing the intertwined issues of wildlife crime and money laundering

His presentation provided insights into Uganda's achievements, such as improved coordination between law enforcement agencies, stronger monitoring mechanisms for financial flows linked to wildlife crime, and enhanced regulatory frameworks. Additionally, Mr. Besigye emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in ensuring the effective implementation of these measures.

The Role of ESAAMLG and the Importance of Collaboration

ESAAMLG continues to play a pivotal role in fostering cooperation and collaboration among member states in the fight against money laundering, terrorist financing, and other financial crimes. By bringing together financial intelligence units (FIUs), law enforcement agencies, policymakers, and the private sector, ESAAMLG strengthens regional and international efforts to curb financial crimes.
